This weekend, Squishy and I had fun fruit redo. We had two we have had, but didn’t document.
First up the Sapote.
It has the texture of an avocado, green on outside and white on inside with big seeds. The flavor is very mild and unremarkable.
Squishy review: mildly sweet, not bad, not great.
My review: blah. Worth trying if you are into trying new things, but I won’t be getting it again.
(those kidney looking things are the seeds)
Next up is star fruit. It should be noted that the one we have doesn’t look like it is at the peak, but a just before ripe.
This fruit is, as the name suggests, shaped like a star when cut. It is citrus-like and sweet.
Squishy review: odd texture, like a hard orange. Strong citrus flavor without sweetness. Overall good, but won’t be getting anymore.
My review: tasty, simply sweet and citrusy. I like it and think it would be good in a salad for visual interest and simple flavor.
My favorite Asian is visiting. Thisr can only mean one thing… FUN FRUIT!
Today we ate a red tamarillo. Because of thename I was expecting a tomatillo kind of fruit – spicy. It was actually sour, but very plum like with a lot more seeds. I liked it ok but the asian didn’t like it at all. She is just that way.
Until next time.
This draft has been stuck on my phone for a couple of weeks. Now it is posted. Enjoy.
Today’s fun fruit is a champagne mango.
It is a rich yellow color and is a very sweet mango. It is very juicy sweet and even pretty slippery. Bean likes it too!
This it is a fun fruit win.
A species of annona, native to highland vallies of Bolivia. Mark Twain called it “the most delicious fruit known to man”
Our review… it is a very mild flavor. Although it is a fruit, it has a very creamy flavor. The texture is melon like… I’d describe it as a creamed melon even though the flavor is on the bland side. Overall, pretty good. I’d eat it again, but wouldn’t seek it out. Clearly, Mark Twain led a sheltered life if this is the “most delicious” fruit.
AZN found a site outlining the top 10 most exotic fruits. I am excited to report that we have tried many of them.
1. Rambutan – we tried it. If memory serves it was bland and over all blah. We will have to try it again.
4. Lychee – only had it canned and it was very sweet. It is also used in cocktails frequently.
5. Star fruit – not as good as expected. It was bitter and sour
7. Kumquat – tasted like a bitter orange. Pretty good, I thought – but AZN didn’t like it.
8. Durian – smelled like sewage and tasted like feet. It was nasty! Avoid this one unless you lost a bet. FYI, don’t even risk making that bet.
9. African cucumber (aka, honed melon) – pretty good. Slimy and citrusy / melon tasting with odd seeds.
There is another site that we will also have to work through… http://blog.hotelclub.com/10-more-must-try-exotic-fruits
yay fun fruit!
It is that time again. Azn brought fun fruit to try.
The tomato looking thing is a “Sharon” (more commonly known as persimmon). It is pretty good – although a very unexpected flavor. It has the texture of a not quite ripe peach, but the flavor of sweet potato casserole, even the spices.
The green thing is a guava. We don’t think it is ripe judging from other internet pictures. That and it has the texture of an apple and it is very tart and bitter. If it is ripe, then it could be an apple guava, if so… it isn’t good. I think worth trying again when ripe. For now… not so good.
Thanks to azn for sharing!
This weekend we ate too much Thanksgiving dinner, trimmed the tree (well… got it up with lights) and hung the stockins with care.
Then our friends joined us and we made tres leche cake. Well… two actually. The first one was a huge failure but the second is ok. Still have to perfect this one because when it is done well it is soooo very good! One of my favorite new things is eating what I call “fun fruit” which is trying new fruit whenever I see my Korean friend. The picture is the fruit we got this weeknd… not that we remembered to eat it. We did, however, remember how to play Go Fish and had a ball doing that!
Today. The Bean and I will eat the new fun fruit and remember our friends while we slurp the pears.
Do you have any traditions that don’t make sense to anyone else? (Like the fun fruit)
