Cancelling Monday

January 27, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Although I don’t generally have “bad Mondays”, I took the opportunity to cancel my own Monday this week and opted to go skiing instead. I had a few hesitations with this plan.

- I hadn’t been skiing in over 15 years.

- I enjoy having all my parts where they go and generally discourage moving body parts into places they don’t belong (i.e. my knee bending the wrong way, etc.)

- VA isn’t known for good skiing and where I went was almost all man-made snow (translation in my brain was ice)

- Skiing is physically difficult and I am (to put it kindly) out of shape.

- Skiing requires a lot of equipment that I haven’t had in about 10 years.

Even though I was nervous, I did it. I did it with a lesson. My lesson was much easier than I thought it would be, so my confidence was good when I got on the ski lift. I then proceeded to fall on the slope leaving the ski lift.

I hate that slope!

I got up and the rest of the day went well. I even got enough confidence to go to the intermediate slope when the easy slope got crowded.

For those of you who haven’t been skiing and have thought about getting back into it, the beginner skis are awesome! They are short and wide. I remember my first time skis were about as tall as I was. The skis I had on yesterday were about 3.5 feet tall and were much wider than I remember skis being. This really really really helped with the whole crossing skis problem!

I think I will have to go again this season. Maybe even go twice.

What did you do in your past that you’d like to do again?

Powerful Women

January 13, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Feminism is a funny thing. The stereo type of a feminist is some butch, man-hating he-woman. I consider myself a feminist.  I am not the most “femme” woman in the world, I am far from a man-hating he-woman. I feel like a “feminist” is simply someone who is proud of women and feel like women can do anything and should be “allowed” to do anything. This post was from two articles that talk about successful women. It is my ode to feminism… may we continue to grow out of the meek and mild ladies of yester-year, and “roar” into the future.

The first article is talking about how women are slowly (but surely) taking over the workplace. This is paving the way for women to have “it all”. One of the things the article talks about is having to deal with “the juggle”. Now that I have a kiddo – I feel that more than I thought I would. I really envy the stay at home moms, but not sure I would give up working if I had the option. Part of the reason I would struggle is my job makes it as easy as possible to both work and have a family. This is only possible because of all the hard work all the women before me did. I tip my hat to you, and hope you are proud of where we are so far.

The second article just asks “What three women over 40 have wowed you?” Narrowing to three is the tough part – so I will categorize:

My historical three would be Susan B. Anthony, Clara Barton, Rosa Parks.

My historical, but still living list would be Jane Goodall, Maya Angelou, Sandra Day O’Connor

My “last decade” list would include J.K. Rowling (she made the world read about a wizard), Oprah (not for being rich, but for giving back), Condoleezza Rice (for having the hardest job on the planet at one of the hardest times, and still kept her grace)

My mother was a great inspiration in my feminism, and I hope I can do the same for the Bean.

What three women have wowed you?

The 10th Day Before Christmas

December 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On this, 10 days before Christmas, I freak out about…

  • Packing for trip back home (and fretting about crying baby on plane)
  • Finalizing work projects before vacation
  • Not forgetting something really important for the trip (like a car seat)
  • Getting the house ready for 6 bedrooms full of over night guests when we get back from vacation

I am really looking forward to all the things coming, but I am having a hard time listing everything that needs to be done so I can just do it. Thankfully, C is on the case. He has been very helpful over the last few days.

Here we go… I am making a plan, checking it twice. All people who could be naughty or nice better be nice, or I will be naughty. Don’t make me do that. This means you store clerk. Oh, you too person who cuts me off in traffic. You didn’t think I’d let you off the hook, airline industry, did you? Finally – weather man – be nice will ya? Thanks!

29 Days Left

December 2, 2009 · Leave a Comment

What kind of demented fool decided to make time speed up as you get older. I couldn’t WAIT for time to go by when I was young and now can’t seem to keep up with it.

Today there are 29 days left in 2009. This year has been a whirl wind of changes in my world. I had a baby, moved, then moved again (because moving with an infant is SO much fun!). Hubby and I the workmen survived a renovation of two houses (one of which I was living in at the time). I’ve learned how to deal with tourists who come to visit the house. I met Spiderman and made him cry (does that make me the villan?) and met a few new friends.

In these next 29 days, I hope to finish what I set out for the year… I will have to go back and look at what that was and plan how I can incorporate those goals into next year.

Did you fulfill your resolutions for 2009? Do you have time to finish now?

Embracing the Curl

November 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

When I was in 5th grade, I begged my mom to get me a perm. I had STRAIGHT hair that would not hold a curl to save my life. Finally, she took me to get a perm. It held for a grand total of that day. By the next day, it already started to fade and a week later my hair was as straight as it was before – with a little more texture from chemical treatment.

After college, I tried again. This time it lasted for about two weeks. (Not all that bad, since it looked stupid)

In my 30s, I noticed my hair texture was really changing. Not all that abnormal. Finally, if I curled my hair, it stayed as directed. I wasn’t dying to get a perm, but still like the way that curly hair looks on others.

In the last year, my hair (when wet) has shown a lot more curl. Finally – I decided to embrace this. I got some hair products to encourage the curl… I scrunch my hair, instead of comb it straight… and poof… i have curly hair.

I am on the fence about how I like it, but I am struck how I’ve gone from so straight chemicals can’t curl it – to naturally curly.

Getting to the point

November 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I have been called a social network junkie. I am not sure I fully qualify, but I qualify enough not to argue. I am a fan and am most active on my blog (obviously), Facebook and Twitter.

The reason I mention this is because someone from the outside looking in would say (and I once did say) “what could you possibly have to say and who really cares?” As it turns out, I have a lot to say. I feel like the three venues I use are different audiences. My facebook is my “professional” social network. It is the one that I use for general communication to people I don’t frequently talk to, but am also the most conscientious about what is said. My blog is where I go when I have a lot to say, because Twitter (where I am the most ‘liberal’ with my thoughts) only offers thoughts in 140 characters. It is the blog that forces you to get to the point. No room for BS – just the facts ma’am – get to the point. There are times when I say the same thing on all three venues – but generally different topics.

The final question of “who really cares?” is answered with this. I do. I care and enjoy doing it. It is a good venue for me to write regularly – document the silly little things I observe or think of randomly.

Are you a junkie? How do you use your social media?

========Update===========

Apparently Courtney Love uses Twitter to provide commentary about designers. In fairness, I haven’t seen what was said… but from what I see here…

Really? Celebs may not always be all that responsible, but they can have opinions. The Internet cannot be the end of ‘free speech’.

Never, ever, ever

November 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Dooce has a new community, if you didn’t know. It is also a fun read (her readers are as fun as she is – yay!) One of the things she does is a “question of the day” – and I really liked this one… so I am stealing it. OK – theft w/ credit is really just credit ;)

Here are a few of my “never, ever, evers”

- Never accept something you want is impossible. We got a guy to the moon. Seriously, that thing you want… it is totally possible.

- Never stop laughing (even if it is at yourself). Things just get boring if you do.

- Never wear shoes that can be purchased from a greeting card store.

- Never work on vacation (takes away from the point)

What are some of your “nevers”?

How to Set Off the Fire Alarm

November 5, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I mentioned already that we were in Pennsylvania over Halloween weekend for a friend’s wedding. The wedding was beautiful and oh so much fun – but no good wedding is without its challenges. This one was no exception. I am embarrassed to report that I was a part of one of the challenges.

We stayed at a B&B where the entire wedding party was staying. Because we had the Bean (who needed to go to bed early), hubby and I took turns taking her to bed. The night before the wedding, it was my turn. Not all that bad, since I had to iron the dress I was wearing to the wedding and the shirt for hubby’s tux. I wasn’t 100% sure there would be an iron available, so I hung up both things in the bathroom with the hot water running while I went to look. As it turns out, their hot water heater ROCKS. In no time at all, the bathroom was FULL of steam – but luckily, they had an iron for me to use.

Bean fell asleep (FINALLY!), and I opened the bathroom door to get the items to be ironed. Seconds later – the fire alarm is going off. The steam from the bathroom was bellowing out and triggered a very loud sound and flashing lights. The Bean woke up (of course) and off I went down the hall with my PJs on, baby in hand, to find someone to tell them it was the steam from my shower.

I met one of the owners in the hall, who was cursing the person who was smoking and caused the alarm to go off. I explained it was me and got a look of disgust (clearly, he didn’t believe it was steam and was sure I was smoking on the room). We went back to my room and while the water was off, the steam was still bellowing. (They make some HOT water in PA). They turned off the alarm and reset it once the steam stopped bellowing and the rest of the wedding party (also in their PJs) were trying to be polite, but were glaring at me for this interruption. From this I learned:

- PA has HOT water

- Steam can set off a fire alarm

- Babies wake up when LOUD sirens and flashing lights go off and they are grumpy about it.

- strangers are equally grumpy when you interrupt their nights with alarms.

- ask the B&B if they have an iron BEFORE you seek alternatives

- don’t wear clothes you have to iron

Now I know.

I am sorry to those disturbed, but I hope you can at least laugh at my faux pas.

What Happened to the TV Theme Song?

October 21, 2009 · 1 Comment

Currently, I can only think of one good theme song on TV (Big Bang Theory) – all others are either musical montages or just not very good.

People STILL know the theme songs for many shows from the 1960’s. Even if you’ve never seen an episode – you know the Batman theme song. You can’t help but know the Addam’s Family theme song – as it is still played at sporting events.

You can’t help but know the theme song to the Partridge Family and the Brady Bunch (even if you would rather stick daggers in your ears than hear it again).

In the 80’s – you have Cheers theme song and you take the good, you take the bad — The Facts of Life.   Even in the 90’s you have Friends, and The Nanny. And how could you forget The Fresh Prince of Bel Air?

This decade… we have… Big Bang Theory. And… Um… Uh… Nuthin! Maybe there is another – but I can’t think of one. Can you?

So as I heard of the passing of Vic Mizzy (the creator of the Addam’s Family and Green Acres theme songs), I remember all the great theme songs and wonder if there will be another boom of good TV theme songs.

What are your favorite TV theme songs of all time?

First Day of Fall

September 22, 2009 · 1 Comment

It won’t be a shock to most of you that I LOVE fall. It is my very favorite time of year for many reasons, this year is no exception.

This year is the first time I get to share my favorite months with my daughter. It is the first year I live in my new hometown and I get to watch the foliage change with outstanding views as the trees change.

Frantober is right around the corner and the days of no AC are (hopefully) behind us. May the fall festivals, tree changes, sweater weather and shorter days/longer nights be bright.

Have I mentioned that I love fall?

::sigh::

Which season do you love?
