Although I don’t generally have “bad Mondays”, I took the opportunity to cancel my own Monday this week and opted to go skiing instead. I had a few hesitations with this plan.
- I hadn’t been skiing in over 15 years.
- I enjoy having all my parts where they go and generally discourage moving body parts into places they don’t belong (i.e. my knee bending the wrong way, etc.)
- VA isn’t known for good skiing and where I went was almost all man-made snow (translation in my brain was ice)
- Skiing is physically difficult and I am (to put it kindly) out of shape.
- Skiing requires a lot of equipment that I haven’t had in about 10 years.
Even though I was nervous, I did it. I did it with a lesson. My lesson was much easier than I thought it would be, so my confidence was good when I got on the ski lift. I then proceeded to fall on the slope leaving the ski lift.
I hate that slope!
I got up and the rest of the day went well. I even got enough confidence to go to the intermediate slope when the easy slope got crowded.
For those of you who haven’t been skiing and have thought about getting back into it, the beginner skis are awesome! They are short and wide. I remember my first time skis were about as tall as I was. The skis I had on yesterday were about 3.5 feet tall and were much wider than I remember skis being. This really really really helped with the whole crossing skis problem!
I think I will have to go again this season. Maybe even go twice.
What did you do in your past that you’d like to do again?

This weekend I committed to the ‘Chocolate Chase’. It was a 5K run/walk with a chocolate festival at the end.
I ran as much as I could, but finished the whole thing this time. The course wasn’t nearly as flat as I was hoping it would be – with a big hill at the end… but I did it.
The chocolate festival wasn’t as great as I’d hoped. While the chocolate prizes they gave may have been good… almost everything had nuts and those without nuts were overpriced.
Oh well… I have one more goal down.

Just a little note (more for myself) that I did it again. I went to the gym this morning before work!
I even made it in time for the class I wanted to take. The class had a sub today though (I guess the normal person also wanted to sleep in). If this were the normal teacher, I’d have to re-evaluate my desire to work out in the mornings with a class – she was dangerously close to “woo girl”. In the morning, the LAST thing I want from my gym instructor is “woo-ing”. Will give it a whirl again next week with the normal instructor. If the woo-ing continues, I will find another workout for Wednesdays.
I also came home and wanted to go back to bed – but will do that tonight.
Think I can do it again tomorrow?

This morning I woke up a little later than planned – too late to make it to the class I wanted to go to.
I am proud to report that I went anyway. At 6:08 am, I entered to the gym and walked/ran on the treadmill followed by weights. We won’t discuss what I ate yesterday… let’s just say that I shouldn’t have Oreos in the house when I am at the beginning of a new mantra. We can focus on the fact that I went to a weight class last night instead.
Focus on the positive!
I did discover some new things about my newfound hometown. I knew this was a “running community”. That wasn’t a secret. But it seems the runners are out and about even before the sun rises. Many of them. A couple small groups, several individuals, and one large group. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE? It is time for bed. Didn’t they get the memo?
I got my early morning giggle from one of the “funny cabs” (cabs that are pretty standard, except they have amusing little statements on their bumpers). The one I saw this morning said: “A man who procrastinates is… ummm…”

Motivation comes in waves and for different topics. Late last week I felt motivated to get back on the healthy lifestyle bandwagon (just after the purchase of Golden Oreos). I looked at my schedule and realized that getting to the gym in the evenings is hard to do. Hubby is great and takes care of the Bean, but there are always reasons why I can’t make it to the gym classes I like. There are a million reasons why I “can’t” go on my own… primary reason… I am not a good self motivator at the gym. So I VOWED to myself:
“I will go to the 6 AM classes at the gym!”
Yeah… I was gonna.
This morning I even woke up in time to get to the class on time. It was quiet. It was cozy in bed. I had good reasons (in my mind) to skip today.
good reason??? really? Awake, nothing going on, class starting soon… and I can’t make it? I guess that powerful motivation I had on Friday didn’t last to Monday morning. Tomorrow… I will try again.
No. I WILL go tomorrow. really.
What I can do today is continue with the rest of the healthy living plan. I can eat well. I can go to the gym after work (thanks hubby!), and I can avoid eating the entire package of Oreos. I will eat 2, account for them, and move on. I can remember that I quit smoking cold turkey… certainly losing weight and getting to the gym can’t be that hard.
Writing this on my blog will be how I will get my motivation back. If things go well, I will report on progress. If they don’t go well, I will wallow in my own disappointment with my bag of Oreos.
