A new topic I have decided to start on my blog relates to some theories that hubby and I (more he than I) have about babies.

The one from a few months ago, but was brought up in conversation today was:

Hubby seems to think that there is no reason why it should take longer than 5 minutes to leave the house with a child at any time.

I don’t know why, or how, or if, it can take 20 minutes to leave the house… but I hear it is common. Here is Private-i’s theory:

When the baby has decided that she’ll only take THAT ONE pink binky even though all the others seem identical. They are not and if you don’t bring THAT one, there will be no peace. 

Oh and did I mention it’s not in the diaper bag? not that you can prove that because the diaper bag is mysteriously missing too… Oh wait, it’s there under the groceries you carried in at the same time. Crap! You forgot to put away the ice cream and now it’s melted all down INTO the diaper bag.

You’re going to have to repack with all new, clean, dry items and that’ll take at least 20 minutes. Except that now the baby has fallen asleep and she hasn’t slept for more than 10 minutes all day and she’s cranky so you’re certainly NOT going to wake her now. 

Might as well have a bowl of ice cream from the bottom of the diaper bag.

I am officially walking into my 18th week of pregnancy, this week it is the size of a Bell Pepper.

I still feel sick in the afternoons and especially the evenings, no sign of it going away any time soon. I have my next doc appointment next week, so will be requesting some medicinal help making it go away.

Have not felt any more motion — starting to think it wasn’t actually movement when I thought it was. The window is still open for 2 more weeks to feel it for the first time, so not worried at all — just excited to feel it (definitively) .

Still wearing my normal clothes, although I have moved into my “fat pants” or wearing dresses to prevent a tight waistband. I am still losing weight, although not much. I am hoping the medicinal help mentioned above will help this. At this rate I will weigh less when the baby is born than I did before I got pregnant… not exactly the diet plan I was hoping for. I am glad that I don’t require maternity wear though. The shirts I have aren’t really that bad, but I have not been able to get myself to buy a pair of pants yet. I realize the “bad part” is covered by the shirt, but I just can’t stand them. I am sure that when I get too big for my fattest pair of fat pants I will find something that will do… but I am not looking forward to it.

I am, on the other hand, looking forward to two weeks from today. That is when we find out the sex (if all goes well). Then I will start my shopping… which I am also looking forward to. Who knew how much fun baby shopping could be??

Last night, while chatting with hubby, I am pretty sure I felt my little alien move. 17 weeks in, I finally feel it (WOO HOO!) Apparently this is called “the quickening”. Before now, I only knew the quickening as a term from ‘Highlander’. Live ‘n learn I guess.

It kind of felt like a pulse from the inside, but it was only for a minute and was not regular beats. I have asked others and they also think that was it. I am REALLY excited about it. I guess that makes it a little more real.

I kind of wondered what exactly was poking me. My grapefruit (this week’s name) is about 5″ long, but can’t be that thick really. Apparently this week he/she is getting better bone density… so maybe it was a head, a foot… maybe even a fist? Or, maybe the alien is practicing for the Olympics and it was a butt… where a move didn’t go quite as planned. Who knows… I am sure I will be able to ID the body part poking me soon… although not soon enough.

As for the rest… I am still feeling sick. Although the time I feel sick moved… it now conflicts with my work day, which makes the end of my day SOO much better (she says factiously). Alas… I hear the prize at the end is worth it. (these are the lies I tell myself to get through the day) I have officially plateaued. I have not lost anymore weight, but also have not gained any. I realize that I should probably be counting my blessings, but this far in, I would think this is no longer normal. I am avoiding taking any drugs for the morning afternoon/evening sickness, thinking it will go away on its own and this is normal. But I am losing faith in that line of BS and am thinking of asking for something to make me eat something more than a bean burrito or oatmeal. For now, I will just remember that this is all worth it…

I read a list of 25 things that are vanishing from America. Some I was saddened by some things, others were expected, some I was surprised they still existed.

Does anything on the list surprise you?

I know in my head that I am actually pregnant. I REALLY know in my stomach, who reminds me when I haven’t eaten, have eaten too much, or have eaten the wrong thing. But somehow, it just doesn’t seem real.

The avocado (this week’s name) is in there. I have seen pictures. But I am not showing. I have not felt it. I feel a little silly doing all this planning for something that doesn’t really seem real. Hubby thinks I am insane because I haven’t had a normal diet in over a month and he is happy that I eat anything… he thinks that should be real enough. I don’t know if it is because I don’t want to associate getting sick with my perfect little baby, but I know it just doesn’t seem real to me yet.

Don’t get me wrong — even though it hasn’t felt real, I am still REALLY excited and doing a lot of planning and reading and daydreaming about it’s future.

Am I alone here? Any other moms take a while to have it feel “real”? When does it feel “real”?
